Abstract

Movement is said to be essential for the maintenance of the physical health of individuals. The following research tries to go beyond the physical aspects that relate to movement-based activities and explores the relation of dance/movement with a psychological variable - self-concept. The study is primarily qualitative and examines the subjective experiences of individuals that are tied to the various movement-based activities practiced. Along with this, the Robson Self-Concept Questionnaire has been used to measure the score that the participants get for their self-concept. The values obtained are examined for correlation with factors like presence and duration of training. Qualitative findings suggest that the engagement in movement-based activities leads to an impact on the self. This is through the navigation done with emotional, physical and social aspects of the self.
