Abstract
Fast-developing cities like Ahmedabad exhibit food insecurity as a critical challenge in urban India. The issue of hunger occurs simultaneously with plentiful leftover food that restaurants and households throw out. Meals of Hope initiative created a sustainable food redistribution model that combined community participation to solve the food surplus waste problem. Five university students led this capstone project, which targeted food waste reduction and enhanced last-mile food access through community-based interventions and strategic partnerships. The Robin Hood Army (RHA), a volunteer-based organization functioning without funding across multiple nations to connect excess resources with areas of need, formed the core partnership of this initiative. The team utilized RHA’s decentralized approach to organize specific food drives and establish digital tracking systems along with demand-mapping techniques to boost effectiveness and efficiency. The program included significant activities such as food package distributions to impoverished urban areas, senior citizen dinners, grain distributions in rural areas, and child welfare campaigns with the Aasmaan Foundation. Over the period of three months, the team assessed demand and supply trends by community comments, delivery schedules. According to the data, 56% of people participated in afternoon distributions, and places like Law Garden and Ghuma continuously had higher demand. The project revealed that data-driven resource allocation is essential, while volunteer models show scalability potential, and successful food distribution depends on trust and empathy. The investigation revealed operational deficiencies within existing NGO frameworks while recommending improvements by implementing technology integration and forming institutional alliances, and decentralizing logistics planning.
