Defining luxury: understanding the psychological and physical features of luxury housing

Abstract

This project looks at how luxury homes in cities of India are changing. We see how buyers and experts view these homes. Luxury houses are not just about grandeur now but about comfort and style. We want to understand what makes these homes special to people in terms of feelings and space. Through talks with more than 40 people like builders, designers, buyers, and those wanting homes we found common ideas on what luxury means. Seven main ideas came up: Custom Fit & Self Expression, Tech Savvy, Quality Feel & Material, Mix of Cultures, Showing Off, Changing Ideas of Luxury, and Living with Nature. These ideas show that luxury is not fixed or only about goods, but about feelings, culture, and morals. Experts often see luxury through plans and market views, while people want spaces that tell their stories and boost their well-being. This gap shows a problem in the luxury home market—houses may look grand but lack meaning. By connecting these views, this work changes how we see luxury homes and gives ways to craft spaces that are true to culture, tuned to mind, and rich in feel. Findings push to shift from selling space to designing full life experiences where luxury is not just seen, but deeply felt.
