Abstract

Analysis of Protein-Protein Interactions (PPI) is important for understanding bio logical processes. The intricate interaction pattern of proteins in an organism can be best described by a network. We analyze the Human protein-protein interaction (PPI) database from the Human Protein Reference Database (HPRD) to charac terize the network properties and study correlations between them. We develop a method to identify important proteins and their connectivity within the network. HPRD is a centralized resource for the human protein interactome which has 9,453 proteins and 36,867 interactions. PPI network in HPRD is undirected and un weighted. Our analysis of the network properties and their correlations helps us to characterize the network. Due to complex interdependencies in PPI, when some of the processes are af fected, the e ect will in general be felt in other PPI processes too. Due to this, diseases often occur together and disease networks (PPI involved in a particular dis ease) often have several PPI in common. We use curated gene-disease database to study the basic network properties of the Disease-Disease Network (DDN) and char acterize the importance of diseases and their interdependence in a similar manner to the PPI analysis.
