Abstract

Description

The quest for the origin of our Universe is an endeavour as old as humanity. Over the past few decades, spectacularly deep inroads and high precision inferences on the cosmic history and origin have been made possible, largely from increasingly exquisite measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The CMB sky has much more to reveal!!! This includes the grand prize of detecting cosmic gravitational waves emanating within atto-attoseconds of the ‘Big-Bang’ that would potentially reveal the mechanism and energy scale of new ultra high-energy physics. In this lecture, Professor Tarun Souradeep presents the case for a next-generation CMB space mission from India, CMB-Bhārat, that provides a unique opportunity for India to partake in potentially path-breaking discoveries, together with providing several guaranteed high science dividends and rich legacy astronomical data. Professor Souradeep is the chair and professor of Physics and the Data Science Department at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune. He led the sole Indian group within the international team of the Planck CMB space mission of the European Space Agency and is presently the spokesperson for the LIGO-India mega-science project for the construction and operation of a gravitational wave observatory in India.
