| dc.description.abstract | Quick commerce (Q-commerce) has emerged as a transformative force in India's retail landscape, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and sustained by evolving urban consumer preferences for near-instant delivery. Swiggy Instamart, one of India's leading Q-commerce platforms, has experienced significant growth in Gross Order Value (GOV) and Average Order Value (AOV), yet continues to operate at a loss at the contribution level, losing money on every order it fulfils. This report investigates the structural and operational drivers behind Swiggy Instamart's loss-making delivery model and proposes a strategic redesign to improve unit economics. The study draws on both primary and secondary data. Primary research comprises a structured questionnaire survey with 202 valid respondents, analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics V31.0 with Exploratory Factor Analysis (Principal Component Analysis). Secondary data includes Swiggy's investor presentations, shareholder letters, annual reports, J.P. Morgan equity research, and peer-reviewed literature on Q-commerce. Five key strategic scenarios are evaluated: discount rationalisation, delivery fee monetisation, platform preference and speed positioning, customer acquisition cost (CAC) efficiency, and long-term platform stickiness. Findings reveal that Instamart operates in a price-sensitive, low-loyalty environment where 59.5% of users have switched platforms in the past six months, primarily driven by price and product availability. Despite improvements in take rates, AOV growth via the Maxxsaver Cart, and dark store maturation, the platform's contribution margin remains negative. The report recommends a transition towards an inventory-led model, cohort-sensitive discount withdrawal, subscription-led retention, and leveraging Swiggy's cross-platform ecosystem to convert category loyalty into platform loyalty. These interventions, aligned with the platform's expansion into Megapods and non-grocery categories, represent a viable roadmap towards contribution margin breakeven. | |
