Abstract

Description

In this ‘Intersections’ seminar, historian Professor Patrick French and IPCC senior scientist Dr Minal Pathak gave an interdisciplinary co-presentation on ‘Time and Change in the Anthropocene’. Moving from climate warnings of the 1990s to temperature projections for the mid 21st century, they examined tipping points around climate change, and how they are perceived in historical time, in retrospect, and in the future. Dipesh Chakrabarty has written of a ‘negative universal history’. Governments and business are now making commitments around decarbonisation to avoid a global temperature rise that a generation ago would have been seen as impossibly radical in policy terms. Should the consequences of the Anthropocene epoch be understood not in linear time, but as a set of comorbidities where unpredictable climate events, megafires, floods, air pollution, migration and pandemics may collide?
