Abstract
Description
Here are proceedings from Ahmedabad University’s interdisciplinary public-facing research engagement on ‘Usable Pasts, Sustainable Futures: The Clothing Lab’ held on November 4, 2022 at its campus.
The Clothing Lab brings together practitioners from different domains of expertise including the handicrafts sector, design solutions, sustainable fashion, media, public health, and climate change into discussions around ‘Clothing’, which is one of the three nodes that serve as anchoring points for the larger Usable Pasts, Sustainable Futures project.
The larger aim of this project was to revisit and bring into renewed circulation historically effective practices that can help mitigate climate change through generating new interdisciplinary conversations around forms of urban living in the 21st century as they relate to the issues of health and climate change. We have identified three key nodes or ‘industries’ around which our host city of Ahmedabad has been organised historically: food, clothing, and housing, with a view to connecting each one to urban life, collective health issues, and the crises sparked by climate change.
