| dc.description | Ahmedabad University recently hosted a webinar lecture by Prof. Akeel Bilgrami as part of the Seminar and Lecture Series at the School of Arts and Sciences. In this session Professor Akeel Bilgrami, Sidney Morgenbesser Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University in the City of New York, explored the ways in which Gandhi’s philosophy was continuous with a long tradition of radical ideas and draw affinities with the political thought of both Marx and Foucault. In particular, he uncovered what theoretical motivation underlies Gandhi's relative indifference to the great ideals of the political enlightenment, liberty and equality, and the codes and constitutions and rights in which they were enshrined in modernity, why, in short, he refused to reduce human beings to ‘citizens'. In doing so, he tried to unearth Gandhi’s deeper commitments to a politics intended to overcome alienation, much as in Marx, and a mentality that gets past the disciplinarities of law and norm, much as in Foucault. The webinar was convened by Professor Apaar Kumar, Assistant Professor, School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University, and was held on April 7, 2021. | en_US |
