In order to ensure energy security, reduce the effects of fossil fuel consumption, and meet climate change targets, it is imperative that renewable energy sources be pursued. With renewable energy consumption surpassing that of coal in 2020 and projected to continue its rapid growth, it aligns well with global sustainability goals. However, while solar photovoltaic (PV) is on track with net-zero emissions scenarios, other renewable sources, including wind energy, face challenges in catching up. India, with its burgeoning economy and increasing energy demands, is committed to enhancing its renewable energy capacity. The National Action Plan on Climate Change and the National Electricity Plan underscore India's dedication to sustainable energy transitions. Despite being the second-most populous country globally, a significant portion of India's energy demand could be met with renewable sources, potentially exceeding one-third by 2030. To address the challenges and opportunities in wind energy, particularly in India, our project focuses on researching and developing a compact wind turbine prototype deployed near roadways. This prototype aims to provide a third viable option alongside conventional onshore and offshore wind farms. By leveraging the scalability and potential of wind energy, we aim to bridge the gap between demand and supply, especially in landlocked areas with untapped potential. The chosen vertical Savonius windmill type offers simplicity, durability, and adaptability, making it ideal for various environments, including urban settings. With a two-blade rotor configuration and careful consideration of design aspects such as rotor aspect ratio, swept area, and blade geometry, we aim to maximize efficiency and reliability, even in fluctuating wind conditions. Financial viability analysis reveals the potential of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) but underscores the need for comprehensive cost considerations and optimization strategies. Marketing perspectives highlight the attractiveness of VAWTs for highway installations but also emphasize the importance of addressing technical, economic, and regulatory barriers. Overall, our project aims to contribute to India's renewable energy goals by introducing an innovative wind energy solution tailored to local contexts and challenges. Through interdisciplinary research and collaboration, we strive to develop a prototype that not only generates clean energy but also addresses concerns related to wildlife and environmental impact, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
