In this thesis, all non-English terms are translated according to the context in which they appear. A single word can have multiple meanings, the word karman in Jainism, for instance, is used to denote both an action or activity and an extremely subtle matter that is attached to the soul by actions of body, speech and mind. I refer to Sir Monier Monier-Williams’ A Sanskrit-English Dictionary for the Sanskrit terms, and the book The A-Z Of Jainism by Kristi L. Wiley¹ for definitions of all technical Jain terms. This thesis follows 2 transliterations, for Sanskrit words I use The International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST) and for the transliteration of vernacular terms I refer to diacritics used in Rupert Snell’s Teach Yourself Hindi.² Certain discrepancies may occur in the transliteration. This is because overall, I have used Sanskrit diacritics for most of the terms, but when they appear in Ānandghan’s Cauvisī I have transliterated them using Rupert Snell’s diacritics system.
