Digitized solution for small-scale retailers for daily operational management

Abstract

Small and local grocery stores form a vital part of India’s unorganized retail sector, yet many continue to rely on manual processes for inventory, sales, purchases and accounting. These traditional practices often result in stock inaccuracies, human error and operational inefficiencies. The Grocery Store Sales and Inventory Management System is a website-based solution developed to address these challenges by digitizing core business operations for small retailers. Built using PHP and MySQL, the website includes essential modules such as product management, inventory tracking, supplier and customer record-keeping, and sales and purchases processing. Designed with a user-friendly interface, the platform simplifies day-today tasks like stock monitoring and invoice generation, thereby reducing reliance on manual record-keeping, and improving organisation and clarity in business operations. The system has been developed following a user-centric approach, guided by insights from field visits and a structured survey conducted among small retail storeowners in urban and semi-urban regions. The feedback from this research informed the prioritization of core features such as inventory tracking accuracy, transaction recording and user accessibility. Being validated by conclusions of leading literary works, our survey findings enabled us to deliver a solution that fulfils its intended purpose. This project contributes to narrowing the technological divide by offering an affordable and practical digital tool tailored to the needs of small-scale retail businesses. It aims to empower local retailers, improve efficiency, and lay the foundation for future enhancements and broader adoption of digital solutions in the retail sector.
