This capstone project explores the biology, commercial history, structural decline, and modern revival of natural dyes in the Indian textile industry and related industries. The study is based on the mixed-methods research design that will utilize secondary research to analyze literature, industrial field visits, two industry case studies (Fakira Fab and The Rewaayat), and a structured survey to determine primary consumers' views on what it takes to move natural dyes out of the culturally valued niche to a commercially scalable, environmentally compelled alternative to petrochemical synthetic dyes. The main conclusions of the primary survey are that 85.7 percent of the respondents know about natural dyes, 67.9 percent of them relate them to cultural authenticity and quality, and 55.4 percent of them show that the low cost of the natural dyes and enhanced color durability would be significant boosters to adopting them. The barriers that have been most identified are high price (25.3%), consumer lack of awareness (24.1%) and a lack of design innovation (21.7%). Market The global natural dyes market will be estimated to have USD 4.57 billion in 2023, with a forecast of USD 7.54 billion in the year 2032 with a CAGR of 5.73% (SNS Insider, 2024). India has a unique opportunity to dominate this shift, given it has a biodiversity of dye-yielding plants, already has an artisanal infrastructure, and has a new domestic sustainable fashion market that is expanding at a rate of about 22% per year (IndieHaat, 2024). Analysis of life sciences presents natural dye phytochemicals, including flavonoids, tannins, and anthraquinone, as providing antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties that further distinguish natural dyes as opposed to synthetic ones. The report also ends with strategic suggestions in the areas of technology, supply chain, policy, and branding.
