Understanding trust, identity, and aspirational behavior in influencer culture: a thematic analysis of fashion and lifestyle content on social media

Abstract

The following study explores how fashion and lifestyle influencers shape audience behavour, trust and identity with the help of parasocial relationships, aesthetic story teling and brand collaborations. With the increase and rise of the content creator culture, these influencers do not only provide content for the users to consume, they actively now serve as emotional companions, guides (in terms of aesthetics, lifestyle and fashion) and aspirational role models. In this study, with the help of qualitative research approach, it analyses in-depth interviews and social media interactions in order to understand how these young consumers interact and engage with influencer content and hence further internalize it within their personal and cultural narratives. The thematic analysis revealed seven key themes: parasocial intimacy and emotional engagement, aesthetic and visual identity construction, suthenticity and credibility dynamics, cultural and identity negotiation, consumer motivation and social proof, practical and ethical consumption and lastly skill based trust in influencers. These themes are further then examined with the help of relevant psychological theories, which include: Parasocial Interaction Theory, Self-Concept Theory, Cognitive Dissonance Theory, and Source Credibility Theory. From the findings it was found that audiences form emotionally significant one-sided bonds with the influencers, they often describe them as “friends” or “therapeutic”. Aestetic content, especially content types like “GRWM” videos, curated visuals, and skincare routines plays a major role when it comes to influencing lifestyle aspirations and personal identity. It was also found that trust is largely based upon the perceived authenticity, consistency and ethical transperncy in brand partnerships. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on influencer marketing by highlighting the psychological and cultural mechanisms through which digital influencers shape consumer behavior. It offers practical insights for brands, content creators, and marketers seeking to foster meaningful engagement in the fashion and lifestyle domain.
