Urban Mining and Industrial E-waste Management in Ahmedabad

Abstract

This research is mainly aimed at considering the production, treatment and reuse of industrial electronic waste in Ahmedabad and also to analyze whether urban mining can assist in managing electronic waste as an alternative and sustainable method. With the rise of electronic infrastructure in industries or the use of computers, networking equipment, batteries and other digital devices, the quantity of electronic waste produced by organizations is equally rising. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of handling this waste are still disorganized and ineffective. Industrial e-waste is one such critical section of the e-waste ecosystem as a whole since businesses tend to produce a lot of waste at a centralized location. However, in contrast with household waste, most of the industrial e-waste is concentrated in offices, manufacturing plants, IT companies and service facilities. This renders it a potentially useful reservoir of recyclable products and metals that may be reclaimed by means of organized recycling methods. Although this is a possibility, the existing system of managing e-waste in industries has a series of operational and economic challenges. The problem that recycling stakeholders tend to face is the difficulty in logistics regarding the process of gathering and transportation of the industrial-generated electronic waste. Moreover, the survival of recycling processes depends on the changes in metal prices, the differences in the quality of electronic waste products, and the presence of informal recycling networks. The research thus seeks to explore the nature of the flow of electronic waste in the industrial ecosystem starting with the point of waste generation in the organizations and the flow of the waste through the collection process, segregation process, and recycling process. The study aims to determine the gaps in the electronic waste chain of value by analyzing the views of the industrial waste producers and those of the recycling players. The other valuable purpose of the research is to examine the viability of the urban mining models that may enhance the effectiveness of recycling electronic waste. Urban mining aims at recycling precious metals and parts of e-waste materials and thus saves the mining activities that require conventional mining practices and in the process generating economic value. By conducting in-depth interviews with the stakeholders in the recycling sector, as well as the analysis of the trends in the production of industrial wastes, this study will offer a perspective on the improvement of systems that can be applied in the management of electronic wastes. The research also aims at improving the concept of a more sustainable waste management by locating prospects of enhanced segregation, resource recovery and recycling facilities. The targeted goals of the study include: To examine the nature and quantity of electronic wastes produced by industrial organizations in Ahmedabad. To get a glimpse of the way recycling stakeholders follow through with the collection, transportation, and processing of electronic waste produced by industries. To discuss the pricing processes and profit margins engaged with the electronic waste (recycling) business. To determine the logistical issues related to waste collection, storage and transportation. To explore regulatory and operational opportunities of recycling businesses. To assess the possible contribution of urban mining in enhancing the recovery of resources in industrial electronic waste. Through the objectives, the study will be enhancing a further understanding of the electronic waste management ecosystem and recommend the strategies on how the industrial e-waste recycling systems can be improved.
